Right after we introduced Bosch as one of the possible motors for our recumbent trikes and recumbent bikes, it became the most frequently ordered electric assist. We’ve already written about its advantages as well as the many optional upgrades and extras. Even so, we still get questions about the Bosch, so we’ll try to answer them in this post.

Batteries

Bosch 800 Wh batteries on a recumbent trike

Can I fold my trike with the Dual Battery system?
Currently this is not possible because the battery holder on the left side prevents folding. Therefore, the combination of Dual Battery and folding mechanism is prohibited in our configurator.

However, the holder for the second battery is only fixed with two screws and can be dismantled and reinstalled quite easily if necessary.

If every now and then the customer needs to go somewhere with the trike (say once a month) and fold it up, the combination of the folding hinge and Dual Battery makes sense. In that case, take the opportunity to order it as part of EPIC level builds and contact your dealer or AZUB directly.

Is it possible to add a Dual Battery system to a single battery recumbent bike later?
Yes, it is possible, but it is complicated and we recommend ordering Dual Battery when you order your bike.

This is because the change involves reinstalling the entire battery holder from the right to the left side and installing a second slightly different holder on the right side. At that point there are also two different keys for the two batteries or you have to order two locks with the same key as well. The batteries will also be of different age and usable capacity, which will not benefit the whole system.

Only our dealers will be able to make the change.

Is it possible to use the Bosch Power More 250Wh battery extender? Does it support one or even two batteries?
Yes. It is possible. We have not yet tested this solution with the Dual Battery System.

Are the batteries in the Dual Battery system connected in series or parallel?
The system behaves as if it were connected in parallel. Bosch says: “Batteries are discharged in parallel. The system is programmed so that the batteries are discharged to approximately the same extent and, ideally, are empty at the same time.”

What is the exact battery designation for US and EU customers?
Bosch PowerPack 800 Wh Smart System EB1210000S (for US) and EB1120000N (for EU)
In general, any PowerPack battery designed for the Smart System can be used.

Is it possible to just add a second battery without having to buy the whole Dual Battery system?
Yes, it is possible. You will then carry the battery in your bike bag.

Displays and accessories

Bosch Purion 200 controler on AZUB recumbent trike

Is it possible to connect the Bosch Smartphone Grip wireless mobile phone charger to the Bosch motor?
Yes. All trikes are ready for easy installation of the Smartphone Grip mount into the Purion 200 controller.

The connection is simple and can be used with the appropriate cable for conventional charging in addition to wireless charging. However, mounting the Smartphone Grip on the AZUB trike requires a special adapter so that it is positioned correctly. That is why we are preparing the whole set for the offer.

Can the Bosch Purion 200 controller also be placed on the right side of the handlebar?
We do not recommend this solution due to poorer ergonomics, but if it is a necessity for the customer, we can make this change.

Do you offer a display that fits on the pedal like on Shimano motors?

Not at the moment.

Is it possible to connect a Kiox 500 display to a Bosch motor?
Yes, but currently only on the handlebars next to the standard Purion 200 display, which makes little sense.

Is it possible to connect a Bosch ABS?
No. We do not offer this option.

Is it possible to connect a Bosch ConnectModule?
Yes, but there is no room under the motor cover for a standard Connect Module mount. If you are going to get one, it doesn’t matter which option you choose, because you won’t use the mounting features that differ between models. We are currently preparing an additional cover under the motor into which the ConnectModule (EB13200014) will be inserted.

Please note that the ConnectModule is intended for direct purchase by the customer, so we do not plan to offer it. You must contact your dealer or order it separately. At the same time, we recommend you purchase the ConnectModule Cover we provide from us or your dealer.

Shifting

electronic shifting for recumbents

Is it possible to combine Cues 1×10 Di2 with Bosch?
Yes. Within our EPIC level builds this solution is possible. However, it is necessary to use components of the highest Cues set with a wireless controller, which are currently limited in availability. At the same time, the automatic mode is not working yet.

Is electronic shifting for Rohloff also automatic?

No. The Rohloff E-14 can only downshift automatically when you stop. Fully automatic shifting is not planned in the foreseeable future.

Will it be possible to combine Bosch engines with other electronic shifting than just Rohloff?

As part of our EPIC build programme, it is possible to combine Bosch with Shimano Cues Di2 and Enviolo Automatiq. Shimano Nexus Inter 5E is not available for Bosch. However, the Cues Di2 does not yet support automatic shifting.

If someone orders a Bosch drivetrain with a Rohloff twist grip derailleur, can it be upgraded to electronic shifting later?

It’s possible, but we don’t recommend it because the wires would have to be routed through the frame and possibly through the folding hitch, so overall it’s not a cheap conversion in terms of components but also labor costs.

Motor

Bosch Performance CX motor on an AZUB recumbent trike

Does the trike with the Bosch motor have a lever?
None of the Bosch motors offer a lever for speed control. So in the US, ours is a so-called Class 1 e-bike with a 20 mph speed limit and the need to pedal. In Europe, it’s a classic Pedelec.

However, the trike has the option to use the controller button for Walk Assist. Walk assist kicks in the moment the trike moves. It can be used by having the rider intentionally let the trike back up slightly when starting up a hill, holding down the Walk Assist button and the trike will start on its own. However, this requires the correct slow gear. It is then necessary to pedal. Walk Assist works up to a speed of 6 km/h (4 mph).

What is the typical length of short cranks on Bosch CX drives? Do short cranks affect sensitivity?
Short cranks are 150 mm long in all cases and this is also true for Bosch. Any shortening of the cranks negatively affects the sensitivity, which is particularly noticeable when starting. The advantage, however, is that with shorter cranks the rider pedals at a higher cadence, which the Bosch is sensitive to.

Do Bosch motors allow you to adjust the sensitivity?

Sensitivity per se cannot be adjusted, but the user has the option to set eMTB shortcrank as one of the support modes on our bikes in the app, which solves this issue.
