Custom Build for Mickey: His Own AZUB Ti-FLY X
Mickey, owner of Laid Back Cycles in California, is no stranger to recumbent trikes, but his cycling roots go back to traditional mountain bikes. In his 20s and 30s, he spent his free time riding singletrack and gravel roads around Lake Tahoe. However, after a back injury in his late 30s, off-road riding on a standard bicycle was no longer an option—even walking became painful.
When he decided to build a trike for off-road riding, he wanted a machine that could handle rough dirt tracks and steep climbs without causing back pain. Together with our team in the Czech Republic, Mickey specced out a custom, fully equipped AZUB Ti-FLY X designed for long-distance trails, high ground clearance, and an exceptionally smooth, comfortable ride.
Technical Specifications & Build Details:
- Frame: AZUB Ti-FLY X with 26” wheels
- Paint Job: Custom in-house Colorshop finish combining Dynamic Grey and Lime Green
- Suspension: AZUB Titanium Leaf Spring front suspension system and FOX Float rear air shock
- E-Bike System: Bosch Performance Line CX motor (95 Nm torque)
- Battery Setup: Bosch DualBattery system (both batteries run in parallel for maximum range without manual swapping)
- Drivetrain: Rohloff E14 14-speed internal gear hub with push-button electronic shifting
- Cockpit Tech: Bosch SmartphoneGrip mount for navigation and wireless phone charging while riding
- Accessories: Full-coverage fenders to keep mud and gravel off the rider
Why This Setup for Off-Road Riding?
Mickey took several practical advantages into account when configuring his Ti-FLY X:
- Ergonomics & Comfort: Our Dreamseat supports the entire back, removing weight and pressure from the spine, wrists, and neck.
- Internal Gearing: 26-inch wheels combined with an internal Rohloff hub prevent tall weeds, grass, and trail brush from tangling in an external derailleur or cassette.
- Low-Speed Balance on Steep Climbs: Three wheels mean you can gear down and climb steep, loose gravel inclines at very slow speeds without needing to balance.
- Dual-Battery Range: Running two batteries in parallel provides sufficient power for all-day off-road adventures and steep elevation gain, especially when riding in higher assist modes. Having the range to tackle big trips without worrying about running out of juice was essential for Mickey.
After several weeks on his private Ti-FLY X, Mickey from Laid Back Cycles is absolutely loving it. As a former mountain biker, he can now head back off-road in full comfort and over long distances—relying on Turbo mode whenever his knees need a break! 😉
