Freedom, Comfort, and Accessibility

Solutions for riders with limited mobility

At AZUB, we believe that cycling is for everyone. Our custom-built recumbent bikes and trikes are designed to bring comfort, accessibility, and independence to riders with diverse needs. Whether you're rediscovering the joy of cycling or seeking a special technical solution, we are here to make it happen.

Modifications You Might Need

01
Just the Trike

Stability that solves everything

For many people dealing mainly with balance issues or recovering from less severe injuries, just the trike itself can be the perfect solution.

With three wheels, the trike remains stable at all times—whether you’re stopping, starting, or getting on and off. Its low center of gravity provides a secure, confidence-inspiring ride, along with intuitive and easy handling. This is a significant advantage compared to upright adult tricycles.

Combined with electric assist, a trike often becomes a gateway to independent mobility, new experiences, and effective rehabilitation.

Special components

The right choice of components makes all the difference

Sometimes, the key to comfortable riding lies in choosing the right components. With thoughtful customization, a recumbent trike can be adapted to suit a wide range of physical needs and limitations.

This may include:

  • properly tuned electric assist
  • electronic or automatic shifting
  • full control on one side
  • adaptive pedals
  • shorter crank arms
  • stand-up aids
  • raised seating position
  • safety belts
  • support handles

All of these solutions are within our capabilities. Many are already available directly in our configurator, and our experienced dealers know how to guide you toward the best setup. And if needed, you can always reach out to us directly. We’re here to help.

Fully Custom Solutions

When standard options aren’t enough

If your situation requires something more specific, we’re ready to go further. Whether you have very limited strength, experience spasms, or are recovering from a serious injury, we can often create a solution that gets you riding again.

We’ve built fully adapted trikes for riders with even the most significant physical challenges. For example, we created a custom trike for Jiří, who lost both arms and one leg in an accident. We also offer specialized components like push brakes, and when needed, we develop entirely new solutions built around individual needs.

If there’s a way, we’ll find it.

Real-World Solutions
for Real Needs

Different needs require different solutions. Our customers face a wide range of challenges, and together with them, we have been able to find effective ways to overcome them. Just as these needs vary and often come in different combinations, our solutions also differ. Discover real-world solutions below.

tommy quick - young stroke survivor on a recumbent trike

Stroke

Tommy Quick suffered a stroke at just 12, but refused to let it define his life. He completed a 9,000 km / 5,600 miles journey across Australia to raise awareness for stroke survivors and he has some other adventures to come.

Our solution for Tommy was the AZUB TRIcon 26 recumbent trike equipped with a Shimano Steps motor, hydraulic disc brakes on the front wheels controlled by one lever only, rear parking brake, headrest and cane holder. Tommy created his own system to prevent knee buckling when pedaling, but we are able to provide that too.

Jiri Hos - severe work injury

Severe Work Injury

After a devastating electrical accident in 2016, Jiří lost both arms, a leg, and his hearing. Refusing to give up, he worked with AZUB to adapt a trike he could ride using one leg and body steering. He is now conquering Czech peaks and inspiring others with his resilience.

Jiří rides AZUB Ti-FLY 26 equipped with Shimano Steps motor, Enviolo stepless gear hub, and automatic shifting. The steering is controlled by tilting the hull, and the brakes by pushing the knee on a large orange part that we 3D printed. The rear hydraulic brake can be operated with a short end of one hand pushing on a conventional brake lever.

person with a celebral palsy riding a recumbent trike

Celebral Palsy

Despite living with cerebral palsy, Petr Káčer is a well-known TV personality and charity ambassador in Slovakia. Each year, he rides his AZUB recumbent across the country, and over the years, together with others, has helped raise more than €1 million for people in need while inspiring communities along the way.

His trike is currently the third from AZUB in the form of Ti-FLY 20 with Shimano Steps engine and our developed push brakes, which allow for braking even for people who would otherwise not be able to use the classic brake lever. The trike is also fitted with special pedals with larger foot support and a cane holder, among other features.

trike can be a solution to multiple sclerosis issues as well

Multiple Sclerosis

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 24, Honza was told he would eventually need a wheelchair. Refusing to give up, he trided a recumbent trike for safe, effective movement. Today, he rides across Europe, proving that determination can outpace even a progressive disease.

Honza would not need any exceptional modification because his „only“ problem is balance. Even so, there are a few accessories that make his rides easier. He rides AZUB Ti-FLY 20 with a Shimano Steps motor, grab handles for easier getting on and off, a high-seat adapter, and a cane holder.

spastic paraparesis rider on the recumbent trike from AZUB

Spastic Paraparesis

After a life-changing paragliding accident in 2021, Lucie from Czechia was left wheelchair-bound—yet she held on to her love for sports and travel. With determination and support, she rediscovered freedom on a trike, now exploring far beyond home, including journeys to Norway.

Her trike is a AZUB Ti-FLY 26 with Shimano Steps motor, high-seat adapter, special pedals and headrest. The trike has basically no major modifications and all accessories can be found in our configurator.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy rider on a trike in front of a recumbent bike shop

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2015, Lucas and his family weren’t sure what the future would hold. But they stayed active, embracing adaptive sport, and today, thanks to his AZUB T-Trisek, Lucas is riding with his family, enjoying the outdoors together.

Lucas owns AZUB T-Trisek with Shimano Steps e-assist, HASE adjustable cranks and special pedals. And a huge bright flag, of course!
