Aleš Zemánek - founder and CEO of AZUB

Marek Liška

MARKETING AND MEDIA SINCE 2015

What exactly do you do in AZUB?
I focus on marketing. I have always wanted to work with graphics, record videos, take pictures and work with the Internet. And when you add cycling to this mix, you get the dream job.

How did you come to work here?
I graduated from university and was thinking about what to actually do with my life. And one day there was an email from AZUB. It said: “We’re looking for part time help in marketing, possible long-term cooperation, would you be interested?” I did not hesitate for a second. The next day I travelled to Uherský Brod and that same evening I started working on first tasks. As time went by, I began feeling I wanted to join this team. And after a year, I really did.

What made the prospect of working in AZUB attractive for you?
The thing that attracted me the most was to be amongst those interesting people who are into cycling, the outdoors and freedom, to be surrounded by all those bikes and amazing products we sell every day.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
I do enjoy a good fair. There is always a wonderful atmosphere and I always get to meet a lot of interesting people. Another great thing is that my job is not tedious, which suits me perfectly. Every day is the beginning of something new.

And what do you really hate?
When our grand planning doesn’t go as we wanted and we have to get everything done at the last moment… Also, I am not too keen on standing in for colleagues whose job I do not know much about and I cannot therefore do it properly and efficiently.

Do you remember your first encounter with a recumbent bike?
Paradoxically, it was at an AZUB show event, where I first sat down on a tricycle and had a short ride around a lake. I think it was in 2014.

Which AZUB model do you like the best and why?
My favourite item is the Bufo saddle. I like its soft suspension, one feels a bit like sitting on a truck seat. The Mini feels quite a bit harder, it is more suitable for people who prefer speed instead of a relaxing ride, who love to enjoy the surroundings and comfort. And that is what I like best.

When you are not in AZUB, what do you do?
I like to try new things and try to live my life with a bit of spontaneity. My biggest long-term hobbies include travelling, bikes, mountains, photos and videos. Recently, I have become addicted to microadventures. The idea is simple – to sleep under the stars every month of the year. Anywhere, anytime.

Which bike do you use the most?
On the Ghost, a German mountain hard tail. In the future, I would love to try a cargo bike and also a solar trike, just like the one that my colleague Honza used on the Sun Trip. O would love to take it on a longer journey. We shall see. 🙂
